Hanoi sets up makeshift hospital as local coronavirus infections surge
The makeshift hospital is among a host of contingency plans dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Hanoian government has decided to set up a makeshift hospital in Hoang Mai District in anticipation of rising local coronavirus infections.

Besides, the municipal authorities have asked all local residents to implement stricter social distancing measures for 15 days from July 24 in an effort to slow the spread of the virus in the community.

According to the municipal Department of Health, Hanoi has confirmed 1,287 Covid-19 cases since the resurgence of the virus in late April. Of the total, 427 cases were documented in the community and the remainder in quarantine or lockdown areas.

Workers begin construction on the makeshift hospital at lane 587 Tam Trinh in Yen So Ward, Hoang Mai District.

The move is among a host of contingency plans dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, said Nguyen Lan Hieu, director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital.

Doctor Hieu added that the hospital will be equipped with high-tech devices including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
