5G to boost Vietnam's growth
Son Nguyen - An Thanh 20:38, 2023/01/08
The fifth-generation technology (5G) provides a high-speed Internet connection 100 times faster than 4G.

Statistics show that 5G technology may account for 7.34% of Vietnam’s economic growth in 2025.

Experts have said that the development of 5G can help increase enterprises' labor productivity and operational efficiency, thereby boosting Vietnam's economic growth, the National Institute of Information and Communications Strategy.

Since the pilot commercialization of 5G in December 2020, 40 of 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam have been covered with a 5G network.

IT specialist Pham Trung Thanh said that 5G would be the digital foundation for the development of infrastructures and societies in the future.

The digital foundation connects people to people, people to machines, and machines to machines, he said, adding that the connections are the basis for automation and transition for a wide range of industries and sectors.

However, the development of 5G requires costly infrastructure construction, such as signaling towers and the replacement of obsolete devices, according to the specialist.

According to British data firm IHS Markit, 5G will have a huge impact on the global economy, potentially bringing in around US$13.1 trillion in revenue and creating 22.3 million new jobs globally by 2035.

5G is expected to enable users to study, shop, and work in the shortest possible time. Under the right conditions, 5G download speeds can reach 10 gigabits per second, which is 100 times faster than 4G.

According to the French cyber company Thales Group, some tests have shown that 5G download speeds can reach 75 Mbps, making it possible to download a movie in 49 seconds. On the 4G network, this takes 50 minutes on average.

The development of 5G not only increases cell phone bandwidth but also provides high-speed wireless connectivity for various sectors and industries, especially automated and robotic production lines.

5G can provide the company with a system to track its products and materials in real-time during production and simulate the operation of a production plant. In Vietnam, 5G technology can have a positive impact on a number of industries and sectors that the nation prioritizes.

Also, according to IHS Markit, the five industries that get the highest revenue through the use of 5G are machinery manufacturing ($4,771 trillion), information and communication ($1,493 trillion), commerce and trading ($1,144 trillion), public services ($961 billion), and construction ($730 billion).

5G can also facilitate the development of smart government and smart cities, thus enabling people to receive better public services through real-time platforms run by the government.

Vietnam among the top 10 countries with the most-developed 5G network

According to the Internet data analysis website Speedtest.net, Vietnam ranks 10th among the countries with the most 5G-connected devices in the world after the third quarter of 2022.

The top five countries on the list are the US, China, Brazil, Germany, and Japan. Two other Southeast Asian nations on the list are the Philippines and Thailand.

In Vietnam, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has the fastest 5G connection speed, with a download speed of 286.77 Mbps and an upload speed of 41.34 Mbps. Apple’s iPhone 12 and 13 models also have fast connection speeds.

According to Nguyen Phong Nha, deputy director of the Ministry of Information and Communications' Telecommunications Authority, 5G has been tested in 55 of the country's 63 provinces and cities, and the government has asked companies to produce end devices to boost 5G network coverage.

In the early stage of 5G development, Vietnam will provide 5G services at industrial parks, schools, research institutes, and government agencies. The Vietnamese government aims for 100% of the population to have their devices connected to the 5G network by 2030.
