Less than a month before Tet (Lunar New Year), Hanoi's flower and plant market comes alive with shops stocking up many kinds of flowers and plants amid rising prices of peach blossoms, kumquat trees, and orchids.

Meanwhile, in the fields, rows of lilies, chrysanthemums and other flowers are waiting to be harvested in Ha Mo Commune in Dan Phuong District and Tay Tuu Flower Village in Bac Tu Liem District. These fields, which were flooded by Typhoon Yagi (Storm No. 3) just a few months ago, are now blossoming. 

Trinh Truong Giang, a local gardener in Dan Phuong District, said the storm damaged many flower-growing areas. To ensure harvest timely, his family replanted chrysanthemum and lily seeds after the floodwaters receded.

"We expect to start harvesting our lilies around the 20th of the 12th lunar month, hoping to recover losses from the storm and generate enough income for this Tet celebration," he said. 

Located about 20 kilometers west of downtown, the centuries-long Tay Tuu Flower Village, covering over 200 hectares, is known for a wide variety of flowers, including chrysanthemums, roses, and dahlias supplied to Hanoi. 

Nguyen Van Binh, a flower grower at Tay Tuu Flower Village, said the weather has been favorable for flowers. His garden features a variety of flowers, including chrysanthemums, roses, and violets and many harvested for the 2025 New Year celebration, he told Hanoimoi Newspaper.

Unlike previous years, peach blossoms at Nhat Tan Flower Garden and kumquat trees at Tu Lien Commune in Tay Ho District are late for this season, with fewer customers buying. Nguyen The Hung, owner of The Hung Peach Blossom Garden, said the recent storm flooded many peach-growing areas, including one-third of its approximately 300 peach trees. As a result, he expects peach prices to be two to three times higher than usual.

Diverse floral options for Tet celebration

A number of retailers are stocking up an array of flowers and ornamental plants as Tet approaches. With a large selection of plants and flowers, the Van Phuc market is bursting with color. 

Nguyen Van Sy, owner of a flower shop in Van Phuc Market (Ha Dong District), said prices of all kinds of flowers have risen compared to previous years, with some varieties such as kumquats and peach blossoms becoming scarce. 

"The selection of flowers for Tet is quite diverse, which makes it easy for local buyers to find what they need. This year, however, they may struggle to find suitable peach and kumquat trees at reasonable prices due to limited supplies," he explained. 

Nguyen Thi Lien, who owns a traditional flower shop in Ha Dong District, said traders have already placed orders from various flower-growing regions in Hanoi and neighboring provinces. This year, the cost of imported flowers and plants has risen by a third compared to last year, especially for popular Tet items such as roses, camellias, peonies and ornamental trees. 

Nguyen Xuan Dai, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, acknowledged that many flower prices have risen due to supply disruptions caused by recent storms. However, he emphasized that the market offers a wide variety of choices, giving residents plenty of options. 

He added the city’s agricultural sector is actively surveying flower-growing areas and coordinating efforts to restore production. Those flowers that cannot be replanted in time will be replaced with alternative varieties. 

The department also cooperates with other departments and district governments to promote the sale of flowers and ornamental plants ahead of Tet. 

The state agency is leading the organization of 70 spring flower markets from January 8 to 28, featuring a wide array of products, including flowers, ornamental plants, handicrafts, and other Tet essentials.
