The center is slated to come into official operation in 2022.
An executive of Samsung Vietnam on Tuesday discussed with Chairman of the Hanoi people’s committee Nguyen Duc Chung on a plan to build its Research and Development (R&D) Center in the city.

The meeting's overview
An overview of the meeting
Samsung’s R&D center in Vietnam is set to be located at the West West Lake (Tay Ho Tay) urban area covering an area of 11,600 square meters, capable of housing 3,000 workers. It is projected to become a world-class R&D center in the future, said General Director of Samsung Vietnam Choi Joo-ho at the meeting.
According to Choi, this is the only center which will research and develop both smart phones and internet equipment. Once established, it would lead the 5G game in Vietnam and contribute to construction of smart factories in the country.
The center was mentioned during the meeting between Samsung’s Vice President Lee Jae-yong and Vietnam PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc in the frame of Lee’s trip to Vietnam last year.
“The project would enhance the position of Vietnam as a strategic stronghold of Samsung in the region and would serve as Samsung’s headquarters in Vietnam in the future,” Choi stressed.
He also asked for the support from the Hanoi government in licensing and building the center.
For his part, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung congratulated Choi Joo-ho on taking charge of the role of General Director of Samsung Vietnam.
The Hanoi leader said the city granted the license and other procedures for the project in late 2015 and early 2016.
The Hanoi government supports the company’s new plan to relocate the center and would facilitate all the necessary procedures for the projects, Chung said.
The commitment to build the center is among conditions given to Samsung in exchange for preferences in Vietnam. Therefore, Chung urged the company to speed up the project to soon kick it off.
Established in 2012, Samsung’s R&D center is now responsible for researching and developing the software market for mobile phones and tablet products in Southeast Asia. While waiting for an official site in Hanoi, the center is located at PVI Tower in Cau Giay District, which is employing more than 2,000 engineers and workers.
At the meeting, Choi informed that Samsung now has six factories in Vietnam, a research center and an enterprise in charge of sales in Hanoi.
Last year, Samsung Vietnam posted exports of US$60 billion, equivalent to 25% of Vietnam's total export turnover. Amid the world's changing economy, Samsung Vietnam would make efforts to achieve higher business performance this year, Choi added.
