Hanoi seeks cooperation with European partners in smart city and sustainable development

Facing numerous challenges in the urbanization process, Hanoi welcomes the participation of foreign investors in implementing smart city projects and ensuring sustainable developments in urban development.
Accompanying Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on his tour to Russia, Norway and Sweden, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said Hanoi is seeking cooperation in key fields, including smart city and sustainable development.

Hanoi’s authority welcomes the participation of foreign investors, including Swedish companies, in implementing smart city projects and ensuring sustainable developments in urban development and master planning, transportation, environment, healthcare, technology transfer; manufacturing products using high technologies, retail, and education. 

Chung made the statement at the Vietnam – Sweden Business Forum held on May 27 on the occasion of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to Sweden. 

At the meeting with Stockholm’s Mayor Anna Konig Jerlmyr, Chung said Hanoi gives priority to attracting investment and technology transfer from Swedish enterprises as well as those from Stockholm, focusing on technological solutions to address Hanoi's challenges, including healthcare, environment, new environmental-friendly materials, transport, smart city building and infrastructure to move toward digitizing the economy.

In Norway, Chung had a meeting on May 24 with seven Norwegian leading corporations namely ITS Norway, Pixii AS, Ruter, Avfall Norge, Cambi, Host and Tomra, which operate in the fields of smart transportation, energy, public transport development, waste treatment and plastic recycling. The official said Hanoi would create favorable conditions for Norwegian companies to do business and support the city in the process of urban development.

At the meeting, Chung informed that Hanoi is among Vietnam’s three cities taking part in ASEAN’s smart city network. 

Facing numerous challenges in the urbanization process, Chung said the city is willing to support Norwegian companies looking for business opportunities and transferring technologies, deeming Norwegian technologies as capable of addressing Hanoi’s current issues. 

In response, a number of Norwegian companies informed they would soon send a business delegation to Hanoi in a bid to inquire about investment and business opportunities.

On May 23, Chung had a meeting with Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, during which the two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two cities in the 2019 – 2021 period. The MoU mapped out plan for Moscow’s supports to Hanoi in smart transport and public services management, education and technology transfer in healthcare sector. 

Chung requested Moscow to share its expertise and transferring technologies in smart city development, especially as Moscow’s current smart city model is highly regarded worldwide.
