Hanoi mayor calls for safe driving

Every year over 8,000 people die from traffic accidents and more than 10,000 get injured in Vietnam. The respective figures for Hanoi are 300 and 600.
Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung has called on people to strictly obey traffic rules, including wearing helmets when driving motorbikes, in a bid to reduce consequences of traffic accidents.

Addressing the event "Vietnam Formula One racing - joining 3500LIVES Global Road Safety Campaign" in Hanoi on April 16, Hanoi's mayot called on drivers not to drive after drinking, to wear helmets and seatbelts. 

By complying with these traffic safety regulations, the number of traffic accidents will certainly decrease. An estimated 3,500 people die per day due to traffic accidents all over the world. That death toll needs to be cut, which is the target of the campaign, Chung noted.

He noted that every year more than 8,000 people die from traffic accidents and more than 10,000 get injured in Vietnam. The respective figures for Hanoi are 300 and 600.

Speaking about Formula One racing in Vietnam, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung said it is not only the largest and most prestigious car race in the world, but also the opportunity to show the latest and safest technologies in the automotive industry to fans and Vietnamese people.

“Formula One racing will give us interesting experiences, and convey a message to all of us that it is necessary to apply standards to ensure safety when we drive,” said Chairman Chung.

For his part, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)'s President Jean Todt emphasized wearing helmets is an important factor to reduce casualties from traffic accidents.

Within 10 years, the AIP Foundation, an FIA member, helped prevent 500,000 head injuries and 15,000 death cases thanks to wearing helmet, Jean Todt cited.

"I hope that you will always wear a helmet whenever you drive or cycle. I also expect people to realize that this simple item can save your life," he added.

Also at the program, Vietnam Grand Prix Company presented 10,000 standardized helmets to students in Hanoi city.
