Change needed to people's awareness to improve traffic situation in Hanoi
Tuan Minh 21:59, 2019/04/08
Changing the current traffic behavior needs to be made from changing people`s awareness when driving.
Pham Anh Tuan, a researcher in urban transport, has called for a change in the so-called traffic culture and drivers’ sense of driving responsibility to improve the traffic situation in Hanoi, the government portal reported.

Tuan noted that Hanoi has sên a boom in private vehicles in recent years: about 7% per year for motorbikes and 11% per year for cars. Even though the city's transport infrastructure has been upgraded, it has not kept pace with the growth of personal vehicles.

The incommensurate development and weak public transport system lead to increasingly serious traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the city, Tuan said.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, good behavior on road is key to improve the traffic situation while no radical measures have been found to curb personal vehicles and improve road network. Good road behavior is manifested by the manner of law enforcement staff and drivers.

Tuan pointed out that changing the current traffic behavior needs to be made from changing people's awareness when driving. Switching from private vehicles to public transport is also important to reduce burden on roads. The future of a civilized and modern city must be public transport.

The process requires a great effort of the city’s authority and the support of local residents. The restriction of private vehicles needs be based on careful calculation of which routes to ban motorbikes, ensuring practicality.

Besides, Hanoi needs to develop a public transport network with modern urban railway and bus systems to meet the people’s commuting demand.
