World leaders offer condolences to Vietnam over passing of state president

Vietnam`s President Tran Dai Quang died of a "rare viral disease" aged 61 on Friday morning, said Nguyen Quoc Trieu, head of the National Commission of Health Services for Officials.
Leaders of nations worldwide have sent condolences to Vietnam over the passing away of President Tran Dai Quang.
            
Before opening the 3rd plenary session of the UN General Assembly with the participation of 193 member nations, General Assembly President Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces announced the death of the Vietnamese president and extended deep condolences to the President’s family, and the government and people of Vietnam. 


She asked the participants to devote a minute of silence to remember the Vietnamese leader, the state-run Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has reported.

Earlier the same day, a spokesman of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement saying that the Secretary-General was saddened to learn of the death of President Tran Dai Quang and presented his deepest sympathies to the President’s family and to the government and people of Vietnam, VNA said.

The US Department of State also sent condolences to Vietnam over President's death. “We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of President Tran Dai Quang of Vietnam. Our thoughts and prayers go out to President Quang’s family and the people of Vietnam during this difficult time,” said the US Department of State.

“President Quang was a strong supporter of the U.S.-Vietnam relationship, helping advance our bilateral partnership to new heights on the basis of mutual respect, shared interests, and a common desire to promote peace, cooperation, prosperity, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

We honor his legacy and mourn his loss alongside his family and our friends, the people of Vietnam,” the department added.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chinese president, on Friday sent a message of condolences to Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, over the passing away of President Quang.

"We are shocked to hear that comrade Tran Dai Quang, president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, passed away," Xi said in the message. "On behalf of the CPC, the Chinese government and people, as well as in my own name, I extend the deepest condolences to you and to the CPV, the Vietnamese government and people through you."

"We are deeply saddened by his passing away," Xi added. The Chinese president also extended his deepest condolences to President Quang's family.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also sent a telegram to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, offering condolences over the death of President Quang, the Kremlin press service reported.

"Putin stressed that by his service as head of state, as well as at other positions of trust, Tran Dai Quang earned due respect among his countrymen and prominent global stature, and did a lot to consolidate the country’s national security to protect Vietnam’s interests on the global stage," the report said. 

"The Russian president noted that he repeatedly met with Tran Dai Quang. His political wisdom and shrewdness and the ability to understand the core of the most complicated things which drew the most sincere respect," the telegram stressed.

Putin offered his sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, the government and the Vietnamese people.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted condolences to the Vietnamese people when he heard President Tran Dai Quang's death.

Deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Party, nation and people of Vietnam, and to the family of Member of the Politburo and President of Vietnam H.E. Mr. Trần Dai Quang, PM Narendra Modi wrote.
