World leaders congratulate Vietnam newly elected President
Nguyen Phu Trong is the first person since founding father Ho Chi Minh to hold both posts as Vietnam`s party secretary and state president.
Leaders from China, Laos, Cuba, Russia and other countries have sent their respective congratulatory messages to Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on his election as Vietnam's President, the government portal reported.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and Vietnam are friendly neighbors and important partners with long-lasting traditional friendship. The sustainable sound development of bilateral ties, increasingly close exchanges of experience in governing the parties and states, and deepening practical cooperation in all fields have brought tangible benefits to the people of both countries, Xi said.
Recalling the mutual visits of Xi and Trong to each other's country last year, Xi said they reached a range of important consensus on developing the relations between two states and the communist parties of two countries under the new circumstance.
Xi said he is willing to work with Trong to enhance the political leadership of bilateral ties and promote the comprehensive strategic cooperation between two nations to a new height.
President of Laos Bounnhang Vorachith said the election reflected strong belief and high accreditation of the Vietnamese Party, Government and people towards Trong as the Party Secretary.
Vorachith expected Vietnam under Trong's leadership will obtain more significant achievements and the relationship between two countries will be further enhanced.
First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee Raul Castro Ruz and President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez also sent their congratulations. Cuban leaders affirmed their determination to strengthen bilateral friendship and cooperation with Vietnam.
In a statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying: "The result of the election held by the National Assembly showcases the high reputation that you have earned throughout the years of occupying high-ranking positions in the party and the government, and acknowledges your efforts in resolving socioeconomic development tasks and strengthening Vietnam's foreign policy positions."
Putin stressed that through joint efforts the two leaders will keep strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between two countries.
On October 23, Vietnam's National Assembly, the country's supreme legislative body, has elected Trong as the new President with a majority of vote at its plenum.
The nomination of the 74-year-old party leader as state president came after the death of president Tran Dai Quang last month. Quang passed away on September 21 at the age of 61 due to a "serious illness". Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh was appointed to Acting President, becoming the first female head of state in Vietnam.
