A workshop to gather initiatives for Hanoi green development based on international and domestic experiences took place in the capital city on August 13, local media reported.

At the workshop, Vice Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Duy Cuong said that the event was held as part of the Ambitious City Promises project that Hanoi has joined since October 2017, with a view to sharing initiatives which are being implemented in Seoul, Hanoi and other cities.

The Ambitious City Promises project is led by the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), a global network of more than 1,750 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. It provides a model of effective climate actions at the community level, showing that cities can be both engines of growth and global leaders on climate actions by establishing inclusive low emission urban economies.

The workshop served as a forum for people, businesses and social organizations to share solutions and initiatives to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and respond to climate change.

The workshop included two main sessions, with the first introducing an overview of Hanoi and the second focusing on sharing experiences revolving around such prioritized areas as reducing dust in the air, efficient and sustainable use of energy, urban planning, and waste management.

Experts at the workshop suggested Hanoi to cut its carbon dioxide emissions, increase citizens’ engagement in monitoring local air quality, among other ideas for the development of green home, office and transport.

Sharing the experiences of Seoul in promulgating environmental policies, Professor Youngsoo Choi said that Seoul’s government has spent billions of US dollars to promote the replacement of old vehicles with modern ones to reduce emissions.

Specifically, all gasoline fueled buses in Seoul have been phased out and supplanted by electric vehicles. The city installed emission filter on taxis and trucks for free and supported households in changing heaters of high energy consumption to more efficient ones.
