As a major healthcare hub of the country, the capital not only performs medical functions within the city but also serves as a treatment center for patients from various provinces.

Hanoi’s healthcare sector needs to accelerate the adoption of digital transformation and AI in hospital management, enhance the efficiency of medical examination and treatment, and develop advanced, smart healthcare models that meet the growing needs of residents in the capital and surrounding areas.

Vice Chairwoman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Vu Thu Ha made the remarks at a scientific conference of the capital’s healthcare sector on February 22, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Vietnamese Doctor’s Days (February 27, 1955 – February 27, 2025).

Ha said that over the past decades, alongside the development of Vietnam’s healthcare sector, Hanoi’s medical system has also made significant progress. As a major healthcare hub of the country, the capital not only performs medical functions within the city but also serves as a treatment center for patients from various provinces.

"Hanoi’s healthcare sector provides medical care to nearly 10 million residents in the capital and neighboring northern provinces. Over time, the healthcare system has built a comprehensive three-tier network of medical facilities, covering primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare in both the public and private sectors," said Ha.

The Department of Health currently oversees more than 5,000 medical facilities, including both public and private institutions, and regulates thousands of healthcare professionals.

Ha urged the city’s health sector to align its strategies with the 2024 Capital Law and continue researching policies to guide Hanoi’s healthcare development in the coming years.

She also called on experts, physicians, and healthcare managers to focus on specialized treatment techniques, foster advanced medical disciplines, and accelerate research and the application of scientific and technological advances in healthcare.

“This approach is aimed at strengthening training efforts and improving the quality of human resources to meet the growing demand for accurate diagnoses and comprehensive treatment, thereby elevating specialized techniques in Hanoi’s leading hospitals,” said Ha.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Acting Director of Hanoi’s Department of Health, stated that the event would update new policies from the Ministry of Health’s Strategy and Policy Institute to guide the capital’s healthcare development for the 2025-2030 period and beyond.

Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha, along with other delegates, view the achievements of the capital's healthcare sector over the past 70 years.

“The organizing committee has selected eight general and specialized hospitals to represent nearly 100 medical facilities in Hanoi and share their achievements in their respective fields. Delegates will hear presentations and discuss advanced and specialized techniques performed at these hospitals, which are on par with those of national and international institutions,” said Hung.

He added that this comparison would help Hanoi’s hospitals understand their standing on the national and global healthcare map.

At the event, leading national experts in information technology presented achievements in applying IT to healthcare services, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostic imaging, highlighting plans to expand the use of AI across Hanoi’s healthcare units.

Five key highlights of Hanoi’s Healthcare Sector in medical examination and treatment

1. Digital transformation in healthcare services: The sector has implemented digital solutions, including self-service kiosks for patient reception and check-in, electronic health records linked to the government’s Project 06, and the rollout of electronic medical records in all hospitals in the city.
2. Organ transplants from brain-dead donors: Hanoi’s medical professionals have successfully conducted consultations, organ harvesting, and transplants from brain-dead donors, marking a significant advance in specialized medical care.
3. Quality improvement initiative: The city launched a project to enhance the quality of medical services in public healthcare facilities under the administration of the Hanoi People’s Committee, with goals to be achieved by 2030.
4. Inauguration of Hanoi Children's Hospital: A major milestone was the inauguration of the Hanoi Children's Hospital, a key project commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation.
5. Disease control and event preparedness: The healthcare sector successfully controlled disease outbreaks and ensured public health safety during events marking the 70th anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation.
