Vietnam's Party to thoroughly examine presidential candidates
A decision has not been made whether candidates will be discussed in the upcoming plenum of the 12th Party Central Committee next week, local media reported.
The Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee will thorougly look into candidates for state president and submit for National Assembly's approval, stated Le Quang Vinh, deputy chief of the Party Central Committee Office.
However, a decision has not been made whether candidates will be put forward for discussion or not at the upcoming eighth plenum, which is scheduled to take place from October 2 to 6, Vinh said at a press conference on September 28.
This was the first time such a press meeting was held before a Central Committee plenum.
It will depend on the preparation process of competent authorities, Vinh continued.
According to Vinh, Vietnam's Politburo, the highest body of the Communist Party of Vietnam, named Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh as Acting President on the basis of Vietnam's constitution and Party's regulations.
It remains unknown whether the Central Committee will vote to add members to the Politburo, which is now comprised of 17, but actually 16 are active as Dinh The Huynh left his positions as Executive Secretary of the Party’s Secretariat and Chairman of the Party’s Central Theoretical Council in March for long-term medical treatment.
Tran Dai Quang passed away on September 21 at the age of 61 of a "serious illness" while once rising star Dinh La Thang is in jail for wrongdoing while leading state-run energy giant PetroVietnam.
At the upcoming one-week gathering, the highest party officials will discuss a wide ranges of issues, from reviewing 2018's socio-economic development plan, setting up working groups to prepare for the 13th Congress due in 2021, to preparing personnel and taking disciplinary measures against a former Central Committee member.
