The visit also reflects Vietnam’s consistence with the foreign policy of independence, self-control, diversifying and multilateralizing in its international relations.
As scheduled, Japanese Emperor Akihito along with his Empress would meet President Quang and his spouse as well as hold a state banquet to welcome them. The Vietnamese leader would also have talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and attend the 45th  aniversary of relations between the two countries.
Relations between Vietnam and Japan have thrived rapidly with high-level leaders maintaining visits and exchanges at international and regional forums, as well as cooperating effectively at multilateral forums such as United Nation, ASEAN, APEC, ASEM.
As the fourth largest trade partner of Vietnam, Japan is currently the largest ODA sponsor of Vietnam. During the first quarter of 2018, two way trade reaches US$8.7 billion, a 15.7% year-on-year increase. By the last quarter of 2018, more than 3,600 FDI projects of Japan remain effective in Vietnam with total registered investment of nearly US$50 billion.
