Vietnamese leaders hails outcomes of Vietnam-Laos Inter-Gov’t Committee meeting

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, President Tran Dai Quang and Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong warmly welcomed his Lao counterpart and the high-ranking government delegation, the first foreign visitors to Vietnam at the beginning of the Lunar New Year.

“Vietnam and Laos enjoy a unique relations in the world,” said Mr. Phuc, adding that Vietnam always spares no effort to support the neighboring country in national development and joint coordination at international and regional forums.  

For his part, PM Thongloun Sisoulith was convinced that under the co-chair of the two PMs, both sides would hold frank and open discussions. PM Phuc revealed that the two sides agreed to realize declarations and agreements of the two Politburos and others agreements; beef up political and diplomatic relations, national security, investment, and trade to a new height; strive for a 10% two-way trade growth in 2017. 

The two countries have already figured out orientations to successfully organize the Viet Nam-Laos Friendship and Solidarity Year in 2017; celebrate the 55th founding anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

PM Phuc pledged to direct ministries, agencies, and localities to work with Lao partners to enforce commitments at the meeting and create the best ways for businesses to boost operation in Laos. The Vietnamese PM believed that the meeting would generate a new momentum for the bilateral ties in a more practical fashion, contributing to nurturing the traditional, special comprehensive ties. In reply, PM Thongloun Sisoulith highlighted the significance of 2017 and promised to enforce the four documents soon.

Receiving Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith in Hanoi on February 8, the President asked the PMs of the two countries to direct ministries, agencies and localities to realise the outcomes of the 39th meeting while continuing to facilitate the exchange of visits at all levels. 

President Tran Dai Quang called for increasing connectivity between the two economies to lift two-way trade, partly by prioritising energy and transport projects, dealing with existing barriers and providing all possible support for Vietnamese investors in Laos. 

He proposed close coordination between Vietnam and Laos to celebrate the 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation this year, as well as offering mutual support in regional and global forums to further deepen linkages in the ASEAN Community, increase ASEAN’s central role and common voice in regional strategic issues. 

The Vietnamese State leader reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of giving high priority to the special solidarity with Laos and full support for Laos’ reform and national construction and defence.

The Lao PM, for his part, informed the host of the outcomes of the 39th meeting, affirming that both sides have pledged to build on the past achievements to further deepen bilateral economic ties to match the growing political links between the two nations.

The Lao PM affirmed that the Lao Government will work closely with Vietnam in directing ministries, sectors and localities to implement agreements reached by the two countries’ senior Party and State leaders as well as those to be signed during the 39th Meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee that he will co-chair in Hanoi.

Thongloun Sisoulith conveyed New Year wishes of Lao Party General Secretary and President Bounhang Volachith to the Vietnamese Party chief, while congratulating Vietnam on the achievements it has gained so far. He also thanked Vietnam’s support for Laos over the past years.

For his part, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong lauded effective cooperation between the two Governments in the recent time. He suggested that during the 39th Meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee, the two sides will focus on seeking active coordination measures to effectively realisethe Vietnam-Laos Joint Statements, bilateral agreements and cooperationprogrammes and plans.

The two sides should review and complete collaboration policies and mechanisms, while rolling out concrete measures to ensure quality and progress of Vietnamese projects in Laos, and boost sustainable growth of economic ties, he noted.

The Party chief also suggested that Vietnam and Laos strengthen connectivity in economy, transport infrastructure and energy as well as create positive and practical changes in education and training cooperation quality.

Both host and guest expressed their delight at the developing special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, contributing to the national construction and defence of each country. They also pledged to work together to maintain and promote the ties and educate younger generations on these special relations.
