Vietnam’s U23 team continue writing history at the regional AFC U23 Championship in China after beating the championship favourite Iraq in a penalty shootout to reach the semifinals for the first time in history.
The Vietnamese team was not as highly rated as Iraq due to their disadvantage in height and physical strength, however, coach Park Hang-seo’s players proved determined to create consecutive surprises.
This was a deserved win for the Vietnamese squad as they had consistently fought back and played courageously to ease the pressure during the 120 minutes against Iraq. They tied 3-3 after overtime and ended up 5-3 after the nerve-racking shootout.
International sport news agencies have called Vietnam’s win a historic triumph. Football Indonesia wrote in a tweet that Vietnam is now heading toward the final after a remarkable 5-3 win against Iraq.
