Vietnam wins ASEAN Chess Champs

Bagging a total of 20 gold, 22 silver and 25 bronze medals, Vietnam defended its championship title at the 15th ASEAN + Age-Group Chess Championships 2014, which concluded in Macau, China, on June 11.

The final day of competition was filled with games of blitz chess, in which Vietnam obtained nine golds.

Vo Hoang Gia Bao defeated his teammate Nguyen Xuan Hien to place first in the boys’ U8. Ngo Duc Tri topped the boys’ U10.

Nguyen Anh Khoi, who failed in the boys’ U20 standards and U12 rapid, won victories in nine matches to lead in the boys’ U12 blitz.

Tran Tuan Minh won championship titles in both boys’ U18 rapid and blitz events.

Vietnamese girls also stole the show of the final day when they pocketed five gold medals. They were Bui Ngoc Phuong Nghi (U8), Bui Thi Thanh Van (U12), Le Thuy An (U14), Vu Thi Dieu Ai (U16) and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (U20).

Overall, Vietnam was followed by the Phillipines, Indonesia, Singapore, and hosts China.
