Vietnam to gain 3.1 billion USD from shrimp exports in 2016
Through September, shrimp consumption was more favourable than previously thanks to high demands from the US and EU markets in the context of global supply decline, and shrimp exports are expected to reach 3.1 billion USD this year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
The VASEP said shrimp exports gained 2.2 billion USD, rising 5.6% during the first nine months of this year.
Major export markets recorded a quite high growth (except Japan down 4.2%) like China (up 30.3%), the US (up 15.2%), the EU (up 6.9%) and the Republic of Korea (up 12.3%). Meanwhile, exports to small markets dropped by 0.5-27.6%.
According to the VASEP, through September, shrimp consumption reached the positive result thanks to high demands from the US and EU markets in the context of global supply decline.
Demands for shrimp, especially tiger prawn on the US and China markets are jumping high while tiger prawn outputs of major suppliers like India, Bangladesh and Indonesia may dip due to white spot disease on shrimp caused by climate change.
Many households in the Mekong Delta region shifted from raising tiger prawn to whiteleg shrimp as its requires as short breeding time, achieves high productivity and enjoys stable prices.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, as of September 15, Vietnam’s total shrimp export was more than 2 billion USD, including 1.25 billion USD from whiteleg shrimp, 641 million USD from tiger spawn, and more than 168 million USD of sea shrimp.
The reports from provinces and cities nationwide pointed outs that by the end of September 2016, there were 80,000 hectares of whiteleg shrimp farming nationwide, a year-on-year rise of 6.3 percent, with an output of 200,000 tonnes, up 4.2 percent.
Meanwhile, total tiger spawn area was nearly 583,000 hectares, a year on year increase of 0.6 percent, with a production of over 174,000 tonnes, a fall of 2.5 percent.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recently has designed a plan to monitor the production chain of safe shrimp for export.
The plan aims to develop shrimp farms to the standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and countries importing the product. To this end, the ministry will direct the implementation of a national plan on monitoring diseases on shrimp for export in the 2017-2020 period.
