Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh released this information on September 26 at a meeting on the planning of Noi Bai International Airport for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision for 2050.
Due to the rapid growth of the aviation industry in recent times, the current airport infrastructure will be overloaded if its capacity expansion is not planned on time, Thanh said.
According to the current planning (Prime Minister's Decision No. 590), Noi Bai International Airport had an annual capacity of 20-25 million passengers by 2020 and 50 million passengers after 2020. In 2019, Noi Bai International Airport handled more than 29 million passengers.
Noi Bai Airport is the gateway to the capital, which sees a surge in the number of international visitors by air every year. It is necessary to expand Noi Bai International Airport into a bigger and more modern one to deal with the inevitable overload in the future, to deserve the country's ascending position, Thanh said.
According to the proposed plan, Noi Bai International Airport, by 2050, will handle a throughput of about 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year.
He asked the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to expeditiously conduct investment preparation and report to competent authorities for consideration and approval of investment policies following regulations.
Visiting the airport on September 21 to review its planning, Thanh asked Hanoi authorities to work closely with government agencies to identify locations for expansion, soon finalizing detailed planning and submitting an investment proposal to the government.
“The construction for the runway and passenger terminal should start in the 2024-2025 period,” he concluded.
