Vietnam announces candidacy for Human Rights Council
Vietnam has formally announced its candidacy for the 2026-2028 term of the UN Human Rights Council at the United Nations in New York. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to promoting human rights globally, highlighting its achievements during the 2023-2025 term, including efforts on gender equality and climate-related human rights. Vietnam aims to continue its active, constructive and responsible contributions if elected.
Vietnam urges ceasefire and humanitarian aid in Gaza
Vietnam has called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza and urged all parties to protect civilians, release hostages and ensure unhindered humanitarian aid. Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet reiterated Vietnam's support for Palestine's right to self-determination and a two-state solution. Vietnam also emphasized the crucial role of UNRWA in assisting Palestinian refugees and voted in favor of relevant UN resolutions.
The final trial run of Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien) will take place from today (December 13) to December 21, before the official launch on December 22. The 19-kilometer line will provide 200 trips daily, with 9 trains running from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. The project, costing VND43.7 trillion (US$1.8 billion), offers free rides for the first 30 days.

Ho Chi Minh City celebrates New Year with cultural events
Ho Chi Minh City is planning vibrant cultural, artistic and sports events to welcome 2025. Highlights include fireworks at the Saigon River Tunnel (Thu Duc City) and Dam Sen Park, a countdown on Nguyen Hue Walking Street, and art shows in various districts. Sports activities include the HCMC Marathon 2025, an international martial arts festival and a cycling race in Sala. Downtown streets will be lit up with festive lights.
Vietnam showcases cultural heritage in Saudi Arabia
The "Vietnam Days Abroad 2024" is now underway in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia until December 15, showcasing the cultural essence of Vietnam. Highlights include a photo exhibition on the 25th anniversary of Vietnam-Saudi Arabia relations, traditional arts such as Dong Ho painting and lacquer art, and performances of Vietnamese instruments. Vietnamese cuisine adapted to Halal standards will also highlight the cultural exchange.
