Vietnam, Nepal eye direct flight route to boost bilateral ties
Nepal expects to set up a direct flight route to Vietnam to boost bilateral ties in economic, business, and people-to-people exchanges, Nepalese senior officials told Nguyen Thanh Hai, Vietnamese ambassador to India, Nepal, and Bhutan, on August 17 and 18.
They suggested on the sidelines of multilateral conferences that Vietnam and Nepal strengthen leadership exchanges and soon create a regulatory framework to promote two-way trade, investment, and travel. For his part, Ambassador Hai highlighted Vietnam's decision to issue e-visa to all foreign travelers and recommended that Nepalese authorities improve living conditions for some 60 Vietnamese residents.
Vietnam needs an additional US$700 billion to deal with climate change: World Bank
Vietnam may need an additional US$701 billion between 2022 and 2040 to cope with climate change and its impact on local environmental and socio-economic conditions. The amount is equivalent to 6.8% of the country's annual GDP, according to the World Bank. Two-thirds of the money can be spent on improving the resilience of infrastructure, assets, and people. Vietnam is one of the 10 countries most affected by climate change, which is costing the nation about US$852 million and 316,000 jobs in agriculture, aquaculture, industry, and travel due to sea level rise, salinity, and landslides.

The 11th gathering event "Vong tay nuoc My" with the theme "Empowerment in Unity" took place in Long Beach, California from August 18 to 20 with the participation of representatives from consulates, experts, and partners of the Association of Vietnamese Students and Professionals in the US.
The series of online and offline events is expected to attract more than 35,000 young Vietnamese living and studying in the US, overseas Vietnamese, and representatives from domestic and international organizations and businesses.
The highlight of the program is a series of career workshops featuring Vietnamese experts currently working at leading global financial and technology companies such as Google, Deloitte, eBay, Netflix, and Mastercard.
Hanoi among top five culinary destinations in Asia Pacific
Hanoi is one of the top five destinations for food enthusiasts with "famous delicacies", according to Booking's rankings.
The Vietnamese capital is ranked first on the list, followed by Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, and Kaohsiung. The selection of these destinations was based on criteria such as renowned culinary and cultural scenes and easy accessibility for international tourists.
Vietnam attends 15th ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting
Vietnam has called for greater cooperation among Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar to facilitate trade, remove barriers and obstacles, and further increase trade exchanges within the region at the 15th Meeting of Ministers of Economy (CLMV EMM 15) held in Semarang City, Indonesia on August 18.
This event is part of the 55th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting and related conferences from August 17-22. The Vietnamese delegation is led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien.
Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City account for majority of national informal economy
Vietnam's informal sector accounts for about 4.14% of the GDP scale of the national economy, with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City being the two cities with the largest contributions to the informal economy, according to the results of the measurement of household self-production and self-consumption activities in the sector in 2020-2021, conducted by the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
The following provinces are Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Dong Nai, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, An Giang, Dong Thap, and Binh Duong. In 2021, the informal sector generated an additional value of nearly VND351 trillion (US$14.7 billion).
Vietnam to have more high-quality stroke centers
Vietnam will have more high-quality stroke treatment centers in the near future to improve the quality of stroke treatment and patient care, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Stroke Association Nguyen Huy Thang said at a seminar on "Quality Management of Stroke in Vietnam in 2023" on August 18.
During the event, a group of 36 hospitals nationwide received certification for meeting quality treatment standards set by the World Stroke Organization (WSO). Currently, there are more than 100 units in the country.
Vietnam lacks 118,000 teachers
Vietnam faces a shortage of 118,000 teachers, mainly in preschools. The shortage has increased by more than 11,000 compared to 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training (MARD) reported at a conference on August 18. Minister Nguyen Kim Son said the main reason is the increasing number of preschool children, while more than 19,300 public school teachers have retired or left their jobs.
Recruitment of general education teachers in localities is still insufficient, and there is a lack of timely measures and attractive mechanisms to retain and motivate them. The MARD in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, has sought approval for the creation of nearly 66,000 positions by 2026.

The official website of New York Fashion Week recently released information about the participation of Do Manh Cuong, the designer behind SIXDO, a fashion brand with a presence in 60 stores in Vietnam and plans to expand to fashion capitals worldwide.
