Vietnam as facilitator of denuclearization process in Korean Peninsula: PM
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expects Vietnam to become a reliable venue for events of regional and global importance in the future.
By hosting the North Korea – US second summit, Vietnam hopes to serve as a bridge to facilitate the denuclearization process in the Korean Peninsula, contributing to stability and peace in the region, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said.
That Vietnam has been selected as the venue for the summit underscores the country’s growing status in region and on the global stage, Phuc said in an interview with Vietnam News Agency on February 26.
Through this event, Vietnam is committed to being an active and responsible member of the world community, Phuc continued. He added that Vietnam would keep joining the common effort in addressing global issues of the region and in the world, eventually making contributions to maintaining peace, stability and prosperity for the world.
More than 40 years since Vietnam became a member of the United Nations (UN), the country had served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008 – 2009 term and is the only candidate of the Asia – Pacific region for the 2020 – 2021 term.
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam is an important member and one of the fastest-growing economies in the ASEAN, as well as a key diplomatic partner for many countries in the world, Phuc stated.
With experiences gained from hosting high profile events such as APEC 2017, WEF ASEAN 2018, Vietnam is determined to host the North Korea – US second summit successfully. As of present, Hanoi has completed the preparation process, the country and people are ready to welcome international friends, the PM stressed.
In 2020, as the chair of the ASEAN and a candidate for the role of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020 – 2021 term, Vietnam would contribute actively to long-lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula and in the world, Phuc said.
With such dedication, Phuc expected Vietnam to become a reliable destination for events of regional and global importance in the future.
