Vietnam highlights the UN role in harmonizing the interests and behaviors of member states.

Vietnam has said that the United Nations should be truly cohesive and inclusive, where every member, large or small, rich or poor, can have a voice in deciding matters of common concern.

For that reason, the UN must serve as the “incubator” for multilateral cooperation initiatives for peace, development and prosperity, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President Nguyen Phu Trong stressed in his remarks at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly that is taking place on September 22-29.

As such, further reforms should be undertaken to transform the UN into a stronger and more effective organization that can fulfill its role of harmonizing the interests and behaviors of states in the face of the monumental changes of our time.

By saying that, Vietnam reaffirms the importance of strengthening global and regional multilateral mechanisms.

Mr. Trong note that Vietnam “pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization and diversification of relations” and will “work with member states to make the UN more democratic, transparent, and effective.”

In his speech, the president emphasized that the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law must be upheld and advanced as the norms of behavior for all countries in contemporary international relations.

Accordingly, he said the countries must be resolute and perseverant in advancing cooperation and friendship to counter conflict and hostility. Therefore, dialogue must be chosen instead of confrontation, and peaceful settlement of disputes over unilateral acts of imposition.

In this spirit, Vietnam calls for the removal of unilateral sanctions that adversely affect countries’ socio-economic development and people’s livelihoods, especially the embargo imposed upon Cuba.

The last but not least, the Vietnamese president mentioned joint efforts in the face of Covid-19 pandemic in promoting sustainable, inclusive and human-centered development, highlighting the policies and actions that leave no one and no country behind.

Developing countries should receive financial assistance, technological and commercial facilitation to realize the Sustainable Development Goals, he stressed.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2020 – 2021, Vietnam promotes dialogue, de-escalation of tension and confrontation, and fair and reasonable solutions to regional and global peace and security issues.
