Vice Chairman of Hanoi People`s Committee Nguyen Doan Toan on March 25 has discussed the issue of unpaid tax with 39 enterprises, stressing strict penalties for any deliberate tax evasion act.

Additionally, investors of 7 projects have not paid land rental tax for an amount of VND160 billion (US$7 million), while 9 enterprises have payable business related tax and expense of VND92 billion (US$4 million).

"Tax agencies requested enterprises subject to tax payment to fulfil their obligation in a timely manner, or facing the punishment stipulated in the Law on Tax Administration," said Nguyen The Manh, Head of Hanoi Department of Taxation.

In addition to enterprises having difficulties in project implementation, the majority of these have the cash flow available and generating profit but failed to pay tax in a timely manner, Manh stressed.

At the meeting, enterprises' representatives explained difficult business performance as reason behind late tax payment. They, however, are committed to pay the remaining payable tax amount.

Toan requested related local agencies to support enterprises for any difficulties they are facing, especially in working closely with enterprises to understand reasons behind the late tax payment.

Consequently, tax agencies should have appropriate measure to deal with each specific case of late tax payment and in conformity with the law.

Toan advised tax agencies to soon report to the authority for instruction with regard to difficult case of tax collection, suggesting enterprises to commit on fulfilling tax obligations.

As this is the main stream of revenue for districts and wards, Toan recommended local authorities to be more involved in encouraging enterprises to pay tax.

The Hanoi's Agricultural & Rural Development is tasked with coordinating with related agencies to review long - delayed projects, investors having insufficient financial capabilities, or case of unpaid tax.
