Leasing and tilling each 50m2 plot of land costs VND1.6 million (US$69) and that for each 35m2 is VND1.3 million (US$56), including costs of seeds, fertilizer, garden care and maintenance services, soil, water, nets and weekly veggies home delivery, according to a landowner in Soc Son district of Hanoi.
“The lessees may choose to grow some kinds of veggies in our list in the rented land. Each week, the crop management unit holds a tour for customers to visit their gardens and harvest the veggies. Otherwise, the veggies will be delivered to the customer’ houses,” the landowner elaborated and noted that there are lots which are jointly rented by various families.
The model has been adopted in Thanh Tri district of Hanoi for more than a year now.  The landowners help their customers grow organic veggies following four criteria namely no chemical pesticides, no growth stimulants, no excess of nitrates, no metal – chemicals residues in soil and irrigation water.
In this model, businesses play a role of a farming service providers and carers of the crops but not that of veggies business.
The entire process of cultivating, garden caring and maintaining will be reported to the customers via online accounts.
Favorable eco-lodge businesses
In addition to renting land for growing veggies, some suburban landowners see great potential in eco-lodge businesses which include gardening and eco-tourism.
A landowner is selling some gardens of 150-160 square meters for about VND400 million (US$17,000), offering the customer 15kg of organic veggies monthly and free charge of garden management service for five years.
The plots are advertised to be located in a 30ha resort project, which includes some extra facilities such as swimming pool, restaurant, cafe, operator, central hotel area, mini golf, lotus lake, meditation area, tea, fishing, conference center.
Therefore, in addition to the vegetables received monthly, the plot owners will have 15 days of free camping in the areas.
To attract more customers, some landowners in Hoa Binh province pledged to support them in the conversion of land use purpose from land for forestation or farming into residential land and land use rights certificate procedures within 90 days from the time of purchasing, or rebuy the land with a value of 124% compared to the signed contract value.
