Solemnly commemorating the 70th anniversary of National Resistance Day
On December 18, a meeting commemorating the 70th anniversary of National Resistance Day (December 19) took place in National Convention Centre, Hanoi.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Tran Dai Quang, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, former Party and State leaders and nearly other 3,500 delegates attended the event.

Following the success of the August Revolution 1945 and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the French sped up their attempts to re-occupy Hanoi and other areas. On the evening of December 19, 1946, the Vietnamese troops in Lang fortress zeroed in on targets in inner city, initiating the resistance war. The next morning, the Radio Voice of Vietnam broadcast President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal, urging the entire people of Vietnam to resist the French’s restoration of colonial rule in the country.
In response to the appeal, the Hanoi’s army and people heroically fought for each of their houses and corners during 60 days and nights. As a result, they managed to contain the enemies and foil their scheme to capture major Vietnamese organs.
Throughout nine years of the resistance war, the entire Party, people and army scored a number of feats that culminated in the glorious Dien Bien Phu campaign victory, laying foundation for national liberation and reunification under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Speaking at the event, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai recalled the spirit and significance of the 60-day-and-night resistance and expressed his belief in the national construction and development at present.
Delegations from the Party Central Committee, the Government, the National Assembly, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, and the Hanoi authorities paid floral tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and heroic martyrs at a monument dedicated to them. Earlier on December 16, Hanoi Museum has organized the seminar of “The Hanoi Epic in Winter 1946” to recreate the historic 60 days against the French colony by Hanoi’s army and people. This is an activity in a series of activities celebrating 70 years of the National Resistance December 19, 1946 - 2016.
The discussion saw the participation of so many historical witnesses who used to live, directly fight to protect Hanoi in 60 historic days and nights. Fondly remembering Hanoi's historic moments and his heroic youth, Colonel Vu Tam, the Captain of Dong Xuan Safeguard was recounting.
The tremendous success of the entrenched Hanoi’s 60 days and nights must recall the great contribution of "the lads in touch", who were like living telegram, Lieutenant Colonel Phung De repeatedly faced with death. The death was mentioned in a gentle and glorious way when he gladly accepted the task, willing to take risks if he encountered the French on the way.
Fearless mettle of Hanoi’s people in the early days of resistance against the French colonialists was also clearly expressed in liaison girls and families that dare to "protect" the revolution. More than 80 years old, but when reviewing the memories of someday, Ms. Le Minh Thai’s voice is still wiry, proud.
The seminar on “The Hanoi Epic in Winter 1946” not only has recreated Hanoi’s heroic history, Vietnam’s national day of resistance, but also has had great educational significance for the younger generation about national pride, the tradition of keeping the nation's sovereignty. The heroes, the military suicides are living examples for the next generations to follow and learn.
After 70 years, Hanoi has had many changes, more beautiful and richer. Few people imagine that there were previously citadels founded in 1 night only at intersections with furniture, fixtures of the people to keep Hanoi. In 60 entrenched days, many young patriots have sacrificed; have lost a certain part of their bodies to hold Hanoi for the future. 60 days against the French colony have made the epic of Hanoi, created the country and people of today.
