Entech Ha Noi 2013 to open
The fifth Ha Noi international Energy Technology and Environment exhibition (Entech Ha Noi 2013) will be held in the Viet Nam Exhibition Center from May 29-31.  Entech Ha Noi 2013 will draw the participation of nearly 100 domestic and foreign businesses, including those from the Republic of Korea , Taiwan and Japan. Up to 200 pavilions will display advanced technology and products in lighting, energy and renewable energy, heating, gas, home appliances and environment. Within the framework of the exhibition, seminars and contests on solutions to energy saving and environmental protection will also be introduced. The event is designed to showcase the energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies of Vietnam and the world, with energy sources spanning gas, soil, biomass, thermal, hydro, atomic, coal, recycling, wind, solar, and waste treatment.  This year’s event also includes a special display celebrating the achievements from the five previous Entech Ha Noi exhibitions.  The exhibition’s framework encompasses a number of workshops and competitions about energy-saving solutions and environmental protection.

Vietnam wants to closely cooperate with France in developing its nuclear power projects.Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang expressed his hope at a working session with former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who visited Hanoi recently.France is a leading nuclear power producer in the world and Vietnam hopes to learn from its experience, Hoang told de Villepin. Vietnam is currently working o­n Ninh Thuan 1&2 nuclear power plant projects in Ninh Thuan province, aiming to meet the country’s increasing demand for electricity at present and in the future.At the meeting, Hoang acknowledged the efficiency of French-invested projects in Vietnam, saying as of March 2013 France had invested a total of US$3.1 billion in 383 projects in Vietnam, ranking 16th among foreign investors in the country.He noted two-way trade between Vietnam and France has increased considerably over the years, reaching US$3.752 billion in 2012 alone.Vietnam is also now the seventh largest recipient of official development assistance (ODA) from the French government.Former French PM de Villepin said the government and businesses of France are paying attention to energy projects in Vietnam, and are willing to assist the country in developing its energy sector.

VNREDSat-1 successfully launched
Yesterday, Vietnam’s first Natural Resources, Environment and Disaster monitoring Satellite-1 (VNREDSat-1) was successfully launched into orbit in Kourou, Guiana (France).Images o­n all areas o­n the earth’s surface could be captured, helping to monitor natural disasters and climate change, especially in the event of storms, floods, forest fires and oil spills.Moreover, it will provide high resolution images for managing forest resources and farming areas, adjusting terrain maps, developing geological maps for exploiting mineral resources and serving offshore fishing.Chairman of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Professor Chau Van Minh said that this important event has opened up a new opportunity for the country to develop its space technology after the earlier launch of Vinasat1 and Vinasat2 in 2008 and 2012, respectively.The VNREDSat-1 was designed and manufactured by Astrium SAS under the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) with the funding of EUR55.8 million in French official development assistance (ODA) and VND64.82 billion in counterpart contribution.

South Africa cooperate with Vietnam in bio-diversity preservation
On May 6, an action plan on Biodiversity Conservation and Protection was signed between the South African Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs (MWEA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in Pretoria .The plan includes seven groups of action with highest priority given to improving management and law enforcement capacity to protect and preserve forest and bio-diversity within each country’s laws and international agreements. It also consists of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).Its purpose is to promote information exchange, develop, transfer and apply cutting-edge technology in building a gene bank for better management, and raise public awareness of the importance of preserving bio-diversity.MARD Deputy Minister Ha Cong Tuan affirmed that the Vietnam wants to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with South Africa, especially in preserving bio-diversity and fighting against illegal hunting of endangered species, including rhinos for their horns.MWEA Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi expressed hope that Vietnam will effectively cooperate with South Africa in controlling the illegal hunting and trafficking the rhino horn.The plan of action will be valid until 2017 and after that the two sides will review the results of cooperation and propose new solutions.

Greater effort urged for science and technology development
