Storks flock to Tram Chim Park
A flock of more than 7,000 “Oc” storks have moved in the Tram Chim National Park in the southern province of Dong Thap, the park’s director Nguyen Van Hung said. Scientifically known as Anastomus oscitans, the “Oc” stork is among 32 species of wading birds listed on Vietnam’s Red Book of rare and precious animals. According to the director, the storks have got used to the environment in the park which has plentiful food and water all year round. An “Oc” stork weighs about 1-1.5 kilogrammes and has glossy black wings and tail with a green or purple sheen. It feeds mainly on snails, crabs, frogs, and other insects. The park is protecting this kind of bird to serve its research on wading birds as well as enrich its database. Tram Chim National Park boasts a rich biodiversity that earned it the recognition as the world’s 2000th Ramsar site in 2012. Established in 1985, the 7,313-hectare Tram Chim became a national park in 1998 and then the fourth Ramsar site in Vietnam. Tram Chim is home to 198 bird species, including 16 rare ones such as red-headed cranes, black-faced spoonbills, black eagles, great-billed herons and spotted-billed pelicans.

Vietnam completes HEU fuel conversion programme
Vietnam on July 3 returned the last remaining 11 kilogrammes of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute to Russia, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) announced in Hanoi the same day. This complex operation was the culmination of a multi-year effort by the MoST, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the US’ National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOMAccording to the ministry, Da Lat Research Reactor was upgraded from TRIGA Reactor with a capacity of 250kW (constructed in the early 1960’) and was restarted on March 20, 1984 with the nominal capacity of 500 kW. Regarding the fuels, in 1983 the IAEA provided Vietnam with the budget to buy 140 HEU fuel assemblies (36 percent of U-235) of standard WWR-M2 type, manufactured and supplied by the former Soviet Union.Following the IAEA’s recommendation, and based on the agreement between the US and Russia, all Research Reactors (RRs) using nuclear fuel of uranium enriched to 20 percent of U-235 or higher have to be converted to use low enriched uranium (LEU) (below 20 percent of U-235), because unlike HEU, LEU cannot be used to make a nuclear weapon. The Da Lat Research Reactor is among more than 20 RRs in 17 countries using HEU fuel supplied by the former Soviet Union, and thus was also required to convert to LEU.

Vietnam, Japan enhance scientific and technological cooperation
A seminar on current and future Vietnam-Japan scientific and technological cooperation was held in Hanoi on June 19 to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.Addressing the seminar, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan highlighted the encouraging results of cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in this field, saying that the signed agreement by the two governments in 2006 has provided a legal foundation for promoting cooperation between scientific and technological organizations in both nations.Greater attention should be given to increasing future cooperation in science and technology on a par with the two countries’ potential.Japan now has nearly 2,000 valid direct investment projects in Vietnam with total capitalization of US$31billion, accounting for a high proportion of the country’s total foreign direct investment (FDI) capital. The Vietnamese government has chosen Japan as its partner in the No 1 nuclear power plant project in south-central Ninh Thuan province, one of the first two of its kind in Vietnam. In his speech at the seminar, former Japanese Prime Minister and Chair of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Hatoyama Yukio, said Vietnam is interested in space technology, which will require more investment in basic science. Vietnam and Japan should focus on transferring advanced technologies and training human resources to boost technological cooperation and improve the quality of consumer goods production. The seminar also reviewed the results of research and came up with priority areas for scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries in the future. An exhibition featuring scientific and technological products and introducing new technologies and models also took place during the seminar.
