PM affirms Vietnam’s commitment to building a constructive government
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland (WEF Davos 2017) from January 17-21 has conveyed a strong message about Vietnam’s policies, orientations and determination on comprehensive national reform and international integration for 2016-2020.

It was the first time the Vietnamese Government leader participated in the meeting and also his first foreign trip this year.
WEF Davos 2017 included 446 sessions, focusing on promoting global economic growth, embracing inclusive growth, measures to take advantage of the fourth on-going industrial revolution, and shaping global cooperation orientations to effectively tackle issues related to peace, development and humanity, migration and the environment.
During the PM's visit, he attended 40 successive activities, including delivering speeches at five sessions on regional and global issues; and organising high-level meetings with heads of state and Prime Ministers of seven countries, as well as leaders of major international organisations.
He also had 22 bilateral meetings and two dialogues with chief executive officers and leaders of WEF’s organisations as well as meeting with leading international news agencies.
vWhile making his speech at the meeting themed “Responsive and Responsible Leadership”, PM Phuc presented speeches at the plenary and dialogue sessions revolving around the future of manufacturing from regional strategic perspective, ASEAN prospects after 50 years of formation and development, responsive and responsible leadership in a multi-polar world, strong governance in the fourth industrial revolution.
The Government leader called on countries to act responsibly for the maintenance of peace and stability in the region and the world, and lauded the role of multilateral organisations, especially the United Nations and ASEAN, in promoting common interests of the international community.
Highlighting opportunities and challenges brought about by the fourth industrial revolution to developing countries, including Vietnam, PM Phuc emphasised that his country is restructuring its economy, renewing growth model based on improving productivity and competitiveness, facilitating startups, innovation and creativity, and developing high-quality workforce.
During the plenary session on ASEAN’s role, the PM said member nations need to work closely together to effectively implement the ASEAN Economic Community’s Vision 2025 roadmap, uphold internal cooperation and tap free trade agreements with partners to boost investment and trade in the region while ensuring regional security, peace and cooperation.
The Vietnamese leader noted that Vietnam has made important and responsible contributions to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and unanimity and worked with other member states to build a strong ASEAN Community.
While in Davos, the PM met bilaterally with Swiss President Doris Leuthard, Austrian PM Christian Kern, PM Mark Rutte and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko, during which they agreed to effectively implement bilateral collaboration mechanisms.
PM Phuc also met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, Director General of the World Trade Organisation Roberto Azevedo, President of the Asian Development Bank Tahehiko Nakao, and Secretary General of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Angen Gurria.
At the sidelines of the meeting, the PM also met key executives of 40 multinational corporations among the world’s top 500 such as Microsoft, Facebook, Alphabet (Google), Qualcom, Standard Chartered, Prudential, Alibaba, JETRO, Mitsubishi, UPS, Carlyle and Swiss Re.
He held two thematic dialogues with the world’s leading firms operating in information technology and finance, and answered their questions.
The Government leader underlined Vietnam’s determination to build a transparent and constructive government in service of the people and businesses, adding that Vietnam strives to reach the average level of ASEAN top 4, consisting of Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, in terms of business environment, by 2017.

At the meeting, PM Phuc highlighted Vietnam’s determination to promote comprehensive national reform, economic restructuring and growth model shifting by 2020.
The Government leader affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to building a constructive and action-minded government as well as its efforts to improve the business and investment climate, foster startups, renovation and creativeness, contributing to raising the country’s position and image during the meeting.
The WEF and Vietnam signed a cooperation agreement, in which the WEF will assist Vietnam in sustainable economic development through policy consultation on economic restructuring, competitiveness improvement, sand hi-tech agriculture development.
Vietnam is the first country that WEF has signed a cooperation agreement under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) form to help the country access and take advantage of resources and knowledge of the WEF and its members.
Through WEF Davos 2017, Vietnam promoted its position and role as the host of APEC Year 2017 by inviting leaders of many world leading economic groups and international organisations to attend this event.
The PM’s attendance in activities to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN during the meeting contributed to highlighting Vietnam’s responsible contributions to the formation of the ASEAN Community, Son noted.
Vietnam’s presence at WEF DAVOS 2017 showed efforts made by the country’s diplomatic sector to seek opportunities to boost connection and promote Vietnam’s image to world-leading companies, thus attracting more high-quality resources for the country.
Themed “Responsive and Responsible Leadership”, the meeting called on leaders and governments of WEF member countries to take responsible actions before the people and enterprises, towards contributing to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the world.
