Overseas Vietnamese–a bridge between Vietnam and the world
Ha Phuong 10:47, 2018/02/08
The overseas Vietnamese community plays an increasingly important role and serves as a bridge for the friendship between Vietnam and the countries where they live.
These assertions were made by President Tran Dai Quang at the Homeland Spring 2018 programme themed “Vietnam–Bright future” and jointly organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Hanoi People's Committee in the evening of February 7, 2018.
Participating in the festival for the first time, Nguyen Thi Hoi, a Vietnamese citizen living in Thailand, wished to meet with other Vietnamese expatriots. Similarly, Vo Quang Hue, who is living in Germany, expressed his wish to contribute more to the process of building and developing the country, as well as to continue to call for overseas Vietnamese intellectuals to join hands to build their home country.

In his speech to overseas compatriots greeting the New Year, President Tran Dai Quang warmly welcomed a great number of overseas delegates to participate in the festival. Announcing some highlights of the country’s present situation, President Tran Dai Quang stressed that in 2017 Vietnam has exceeded all 13 socioeconomic development targets set by the National Assembly. GDP growth was 6.81%, while import-export reached the record of US$425 billion. Foreign direct investment reached a record of over US$35.8 billion—the highest in the past 10 years. Independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity were maintained, while national defense and security were strengthened. Additionally, political security, social order, and safety are guaranteed.
President Tran Dai Quang said that last year was also a special year for the country's diplomatic relations. First and foremost was the great success of the APEC 2017 and the 25th APEC Summit, highlighting the excellent completion of the country’s role as a host, which all have marked a historic milestone in the process of deepening economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region and demonstrated the stature, courageous spirit, and wisdom of Vietnam. The theme, priorities, and initiatives proposed by Vietnam, the flexible and innovative administration, as well as the efforts to overcome differences and create consensus not only helped APEC maintain its momentum in co-operation and connection, but also guided the vision and strategy of the forum in the coming decades.
The country’s strength and position in the world are being improved. The valuable support from overseas compatriots, both material and spiritual, has contributed to this achievement. More and more overseas Vietnamese, especially young people, have attained great achievements in the fields of education and training, science, technology, economy, culture, and society and were highly appreciated by the countries where they live. This has brought honor to Vietnamese people in general. Many people have come home, actively participating in investment, business, scientific and technological co-operation, as well as education and training. "The role of the overseas Vietnamese community has been improved and is being the bridge for the friendship between our country and the countries where they live," the State President stressed.
The President affirmed that the Party and the State always attend to the leadership and direction for overseas Vietnamese  people as well as issue policies related to them. There is now an overall policy to build national unity and solidarity so that all Vietnamese people in the country as well as overseas can unite in heart and mind to further the country’s rise. Vietnam’s representative offices in foreign countries continuously strive to have effective measures to protect citizens, to protect the rights, life, and property of overseas Vietnamese people, to support the Vietnamese communities through various activities to preserve and promote their cultural identity and traditions, especially in the teaching of the Vietnamese language. Wherever they are, whatever situation they face, Vietnamese people always keep true to their Blessed origin—being children of the Fairy and the Dragon. Preserving the Vietnamese language also means maintaining a connection between the future generations of Vietnamese citizens and their origin so that "the Vietnamese language lives in all Vietnamese: as long as the Vietnamese people exist, the country called Vietnam exists.”

Also in the evening of February 7, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, Nguyen Duc Chung, had an intimate meeting with the delegation that represents overseas Vietnamese returning home for Tet. On this occasion, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung announced that in 2017 Hanoi’s socioeconomic development achieved fairly comprehensive results. Besides the efforts of the authorities and the people of Hanoi, there had been active contributions from overseas Vietnamese people in various fields and forms, helping pave the way for such changes. The Hanoi government expects overseas Vietnamese to continuously care about to their native land by making practical contributions and offering a helping hand to the development of the capitol and the country.
