National Tourism Year 2016 opens in Kien Giang province
The National Tourism Year 2016, Phu Quoc Island and the Mekong Delta, themed “Discover the Southern Land” officially kicked off in Phu Quoc district in Kien Giang province on April 10.
The opening ceremony on the island in Kien Giang province was attended by culture and tourism officials from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, and representatives of international organisations in Vietnam.
This year’s event aims to popularise cultural and natural beauty along with the unique features of Phu Quoc, dubbed the “Pearl Island”, and the Mekong Delta.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Vu Duc Dam stressed that tourism industry has developed over the three decades of “doi moi” (reform).
The sector has contributed to the national growth, helped promote other sectors and strengthen cultural exchange and cooperation with other countries, the Deputy PM added.
According to Deputy PM Dam, Vietnam's tourism industry has potential thanks to the diversity of natural landscapes and rich culture in the nation.
Kien Giang and 12 other Mekong Delta localities should develop the marine and island tourism sectors. Phu Quoc Island should become a national and international tourism hub to help drive local development, he added.
Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam said tourism is not only related to the landscapes and cultural heritages, but also requires favourable infrastructure system, including transport, accommodation and services.
Tourism could still grow stronger, if the industry focuses on addressing existing problems and obstacles that have been identified, Dam noted.
Besides, through the success of many countries, the two most important things that make tourists feel happy are clean and attitude to guests, Dam said.
