Hanoi plans to open 10 more libraries and bookcases in suburban areas and launch 50 mobile libraries to schools this year to foster the reading culture among locals and pupils.

The Hanoi People's Committee has recently issued a plan to promote reading habit and honor books for the year 2021 among locals.

Under the plan, 10 new libraries and bookcases will be opened in wards, districts and communes in the suburban areas of the city in 2021, to meet the reading needs of the residents as well as contribute to educating the people to uphold the traditions of ‘Thang Long-Hanoi thousand years of culture’, ‘City for peace’, and ‘The city for creation and absorption of the cultural quintessence of humanity’.

In 2021, the city will focus on improving the efficiency of the library system. Many book honoring activities will be held on major holidays and big national events at libraries in the city such as: Vietnam Book Day (April 21); 2021 Book Communication and Introduction Contest for children; ‘Authors and Works Exchange Event’; Book displays and exhibitions; and training courses on book-reading skills and methods, among others.

The city also encourages organizations and individuals to establish and sustain community libraries and private libraries; as well as maintain the activities of the city’s existing library network.

The city also plans to organize mobile libraries to 50 schools in the suburbs of Hanoi with 120,000 books, serving 40,000 students. Another 50,000 book titles will also be transferred to 125 libraries in the community, at school and prisons as well as private libraries.

The 7th Hanoi Book Festival (year of 2021) is expected to be held from September 29 to October 3 at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel (No 19C Hoang Dieu street, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi).
