Japan to support Hanoi in pollution treatment
On May 4, Hanoi Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung met Japanese Deputy Minister of Enviroment Arata Takebe.
At the meeting, the Japanese Deputy Minister lauded the continuously developing tie of Vietnam and Japan during the past time. As sustainable development is the mutual target of both countries, Arata said, Japan is willing to back Vietnam in coping with environment pollution via projects in Vietnam’s provinces, cities including Hanoi.
“As I know, Hanoi is in high demand of more waste treatment facilities and access to modern technology to reduce the garbage burying and raise the living standard”, Arata said. Hence, the Japanese government is willing to propose projects suitable in technology, demand and condition, for which we hopes the city authority would support and facilitate, pressed Japan’s Deputy Minister of Environment.
For his part, Hanoi Mayor shared the opinion with Arata Takebe on striving ties of Hanoi and Tokyo. The city along with Japan’s Embassy hold numerous cultural exchange weeks, activities to enhance the mutual understanding between the Japanese and Vietnamese people, specified Chung.
In term of business and trade, Japanese firms are increasingly investing in Hanoi, and contribute remarkably to the state budget, generate jobs, raise trade volume and Hanoi socio-economic development. The Mayor believes in future prospect of investment ties between Hanoi city and Japanese firms in the areas of trade, infrastructure and industry, especially amid Vietnam-Japan relations striving after the visits of Japanese emperor, empress and Japanese Prime Minister in 2017.
Besides, Hanoi Mayor agreed with the Japanese official and affirmed Hanoi's challenges in dealing with environment pollution as side-effect of economic development. Some projects funded by ODA from Japan such as Yen Xa wastewater treatment facility, Nam Son Waste-to-energy complex and most recently, the signing of memorandum between T&T group and Japan’s Hitachi Zosen proved the closer cooperation between Japan and Hanoi city in environment protection.
Mayor Chung briefed that Hanoi sets environment pollution as one of key issues to be solved under the development program by 2020, visison 2030; saying the city hopes for increasing cooperation from Japan, a partner with deep experience and high technology in the field.
