As Vietnam is gearing up for the commercialization of fifth-generation (5G) service, for which cyber security is an important issue, Japan is willing to share its knowledge in this regard, said Japan Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Japan expects Vietnam to continue using Japanese technologies and equipment in the development of e-government, said Takaichi in a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on January 9.

As Vietnam is using Japanese technology to gather statistical data, Japan would send experts to Vietnam to help with the process, said Takaichi.

At the meeting, Phuc said the Vietnam–Japan strategic partnership is growing strongly in all spheres, ranging from trade, investment, security to culture, adding Japan continues to be Vietnam’s major economic partner and the largest donor of official development assistance (ODA), the second largest investor and the fourth biggest trading partner.

Phuc added Vietnam is in course of developing e-government and enhancing cyber security, therefore, it has huge need to cooperate with Japan in these issues.

Phuc expected with Japanese support, the Vietnamese government could set up a reporting system for greater efficiency in state governance, a key step towards the establishment of a digital government.

In order to expand the bilateral relations, Phuc requested Japan to continue supporting Vietnam in reforming and enhancing efficiency of the administrative system.

Phuc stated it is important for Vietnamese experts to improve capabilities, so that they could join Japanese and international research teams in drafting government policies and setting criteria for data safety, particularly in new fields such as smart city, 5G or internet of things (IoT), among others.

Phuc wanted Japanese enterprises to expand investments in Vietnam in high-tech fields such as IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, and digital transformation.

Takaichi said she is particularly interested in enhancing collaborative ties in IoT, 5G, cyber security, expecting closer cooperation between the two governments to ensure safe operation of IT and communication technologies.
