The delegation, led by First Mayor Torsten Bonew, discussed with Hanoi’s authority opportunities for trade and investment cooperation and provided funding for Hanoi's clean water program.

At the meeting, Chairman of the People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung briefed the guest an overview of Hanoi’s development, emphasizing that foreign direct investment to the city in 2018 reached US$6.5 billion, import and export growth reached 21%.

Chung said that Hanoi is pursuing three breakthroughs in the program of socio-economic development for the period of 2016-2020, including the administrative reform that focuses on building a smart city with information technology application, infrastructure investment and ensuring high-qualified human resources.

However, despite the achievements, the city is facing some challenges such as traffic jams and environmental pollution, Chung added.

He stressed that Hanoi has promoted cooperation with German companies in building systems for environmental monitoring and water supply. On that basis, Chung hoped that the cooperation between Hanoi and other German companies and localities, including Leipzig, will expand further in the time ahead.

First Mayor Bonew said Leipzig is among the fastest growing cities in Germany. He pointed out that during its development, Leipzig experienced challenges similar to Hanoi at present, including development of electric cars, waste water treatment, clean water supply, among others.

With its experiences, Leipzig wants to help Hanoi overcome the difficulties, towards achieving sustainable development, Bonew said.

Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung agreed with the guest and expressed his confidence that the cooperation between Vietnam and Germany, as well as among both countries’ localities, including Hanoi and Leipzig, will be ever more developed, effective and practical.
