Hanoi operarates surface water plant to ease thirst for clean water
The Duong River surface water plant is hoped to help the capital city gradually replace contaminated underground water with surface water to serve local demand.
Hanoi on October 13 put into operation the first phase of the Duong River surface water plant to meet increasing demand for tap water in the city and the surroundings.
The ceremony saw the attendance of Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, representatives of provinces and cities, ambassadors of South Korea, Oman, South Africa to Vietnam, Germany deputy ambassador to Vietnam.
The Duong River surface water plant is the largest fresh water supply project in the north of Vietnam. The key project supplying for about one-third of Hanoi’s population was officially put into operation on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation Day.
The plant, located in Trung Mau and Phu Dong communes of Gia Lam district, is invested with almost VND5 trillion (US$214.1 million) in the first phase by Duong River Surface Water JSC.
In this phase, it will provide about 150,000 m3 of water per day for about three million people in northeastern and southern areas of Hanoi, industrial parks along Road 179, and some adjacent areas in Bac Ninh and Hung Yen provinces.
The plant is hoped to help the capital city gradually replace contaminated underground water with surface water to serve local demand.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung applauded the investor’s efforts to put the plant into use ahead of schedule, adding that it will help improve the living standards and health of local residents.
In the socio-economic development plan for 2015-2020, the city has identified the development of water system is a priority, a breakthrough to improve its residents’ life quality, Chung said.
He asked the company to continue harnessing resources to raise the factory’s daily capacity to 300,000 m3 of water in the second phase, and prepare to increase the output to 600,000 m3 by 2020 and 900,000 m3 by 2022.
The completed project will ensure clean water supply for 168 communes and wards in eights districts in the northeast and south of Hanoi, urban areas, industrial zones and some neighboring provinces such as Bac Ninh, Hung Yen.
This is also a clear demonstration for Hanoi's commitment to attract and create favorable conditions for investors to carry out projects in the city, the Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee stressed.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of the project investment, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung requested relevant agencies, especially the Hanoi Department of Construction, to instruct districts, businesses and residents to use water from this factory so as to gradually reduce the use of groundwater.
Besides, Chung requested the municipal Department of Construction to inspect and urge investors to speed up the construction progress to complete the second phase of the plant.
