Hanoi leaning towards signing with CNN again
Hanoi may continue airing on CNN in 2019-2020, following the successful first year of the program.
The two sides have agreed to work together to hammer out further details before finalizing the deal at a meeting between Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung and Sunita Rajan, Senior Vice President of Advertising Sales-APAC at CNN.
Last year, Hanoi has boldly spent US$2 million on a deal with CNN to popularize the history, culture, and people of the city and Vietnam on the CNN channel in 2017-2018. The program’s first phase started with spreading images of Hanoi around the world. Positive feedbacks from a series of independent third-party surveys show that the majority of respondents developed an interest in Hanoi and want to visit the city after watching CNN’s promotion videos.
“The program not only includes broadcasted films, but also the promotion of Hanoi’s image across digital platforms and social networks,” said Sunita Rajan, Senior Vice President of Advertising Sales-APAC at CNN added.
Mayor Chung lauded the effectiveness of the promotion program. On behalf of the city authorities, he confirmed his hope for and belief in the continued co-operation with CNN in 2018 and affirmed the strong possibility to sign for another two years.
Chung requested CNN to share the database collected via the 2017 program so that both sides can build promotion plans for 2018. Additionally, Chung requested the broadcaster to provide assistance in enhancing the quality of tourism promotion in Hanoi.
“As per the 2018 agenda, CNN would broadcast the third 30-second promotion video on Hanoi, after the last two clips titled Hanoi—the heart of Vietnam and Hanoi—the cradle of heritage,” Rajan told Hanoitimes. “We will also add a new column named Destination Hanoi among our promotion articles,” she added.
The mayor also suggested that the city and the US-based cable news network to work on a potential program for 2019-2020.
For her part, CNN’s leader affirmed willingness to keep up the collaboration with Hanoi in 2018 and further beyond.
As advice for Hanoi’s tourism sector, Sunita Rajan recommend the city to proactively participate in international tourism conferences as well as collaborate with national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines to broadcast films and videos promoting Hanoi during flights.
