Hanoi encourages e-commerce development

Hanoi city has installed a series of vending machines around Sword Lake for visitors’ convenience reducing the number of street vendors harassing tourists in the Old Quarter.
Hanoi is encouraging businesses to speed up the application of e-commerce on sale, arguing that e-commerce is inevitable for a smart city which Hanoi is striving to become.

According to Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade Tran Thi Phuong Lan, in order to promote e-commerce, in 2018, her department officially put into operation the "Hanoi shopping map" at http://bandomuasam.hanoi.gov.vn, which provides online search solutions for shopping, consumption, culinary locations, and vending machine network locations in the city.

Moreover, Hanoi urges businesses to set up websites, develop e-commerce applications and QR code application to for payment and goods origin tracing.  

Currently, Hanoi’s authorities have approved 8,818 e-commerce websites and applications to operate in the city.

Over the last five years, the city has been leading Vietnamese localities in terms of the e-commerce index.

Vietnamese consumers are increasingly familiarized with e-commerce, which is growing 30% per year. 

Encouraging start-up from e-commerce

Hanoi's Department of Industry and Trade also encourages start-up from e-commerce. The encouragement has created opportunities for start-up businesses, helping them to reduce the the gap with already established enterprises, thanks to equal and flexible competitiveness of the digital business environment.

Hanoi aims that online retail sales will account for 10% of total retail sales of goods and service revenue in the city, 100% of modern distribution and retail establishments will be non-cash by 2020.

Recently, Hanoi city has installed a series of vending machine around Sword Lake for visitors’ convenience reducing the number of street vendors harassing tourists in the Old Quarter.

According to the roadmap approved by the local government on the network of vending machines in public places in the city until the end of 2020, about 1,000 vending machines will be installed in public places such as parks, hospitals, schools, bus stations and railway stations.
