Hanoi People’s Committee has just approved the project to improve Hoan Kiem Lake’s water environment with total cost of about US$1.28 million. The project is expected to complete before 2018 Lunar New year festival.

On basement of water and mud level, Hanoi Drainage Company will dredge the mud quantity of 57.000 m3 out of the lake.
To protect the lake’s ecosystem, the construction organization will round up the building site. All the activities will take place within that zone while the aquatic organism enclosed to respective area.  Supplement underground water resources are pumped into the lake after being solved with German technology.
Prior to the clean up process, the Hanoi Drainage Company would collaborate with military unit to resolve the remained bomb, explosive equipment since the war time, in the lake beneath.
According to Hanoi authority, the draft of improving Hoan Kiem Lake’s water received contribution ideas from Vietnam's Ministry of Sport and Tourism, scientists and the residents nearby the lake.
One of the target when cleaning up the iconic lake is to preserve its featured green color.
According to reports, the survey until 2017 June confirms the presence of 59 different species of microalgae in lake water. Among those, some species contribute to make the typical green color of the lake.
Therefore, the municipal authority will collect samples and define the DNA of these microalgae, then create favorable water environment for them to live and develop, maintaining the lake's green color.
With the area of approximately 12 hectares, Hoan Kiem Lake previously was known as the Luc Thuy Lake (because the water is green all year round), Thuy Quan lake, Ta Vong and Huu Vong. Hoan Kiem first appeared in the 15th century associated with the legend of King Le Thai To returning the precious sword to the Turtle God.
