Representative of the Ministry of Industry & Trade said, Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables are mainly exported to China. In the first 11 months, export to this market has reached 2.4 billion USD, contributing to 75.7% of total export value of Vietnam, and up 54.9% compared to 11 months of 2016. After China, other main export market of Vietnam are Japan, the US, Korea, Netherlands, Malaysia and Thailand.

Among 23 main vegetables and fruits export market of Vietnam in the first 11 months, only 4 markets experienced reduction in value compared to the same period of last year (including Thailand, England, Cambodia and Indonesia). In which, Japanese market has an increased of 70% compared to last year, Hong Kong increased 67% and UAE of 57.4%.

At this point of time, Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables export have exceeded the trade value of rice, coffee and crude oil. It is expected that export value of fruits and vegetables for 2017 will reach 3.514 billion USD, up 43% compared to the same period of 2016.

According to Vietnam Fruit & Vegetable Association (VinaFruit), global market for vegetables and fruit has high potential for development, as well as the prospect of changes in the value chain of Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, the domestic market of vegetables and fruits with clear origins is growing at a rapid rate. This is a positive sign, which is a remarkable achievement for fruits and vegetables sector transforming toward professionalism, ensuring the supply source for major markets and export. It is expected that the growth rate of vegetable and fruits in 2018 will be equivalent or more than that of 2017.

As such, fruits and vegetables are becoming an advantage of Vietnam’s export in international markets. It is estimated that in 2018, Vietnam’s export of fruits and vegetables will exceed the highest recorded value of rice export of 3.67 billion USD in 2012, and before 2025 will reach 10 billion USD per year, which is equivalent to the highest recorded value of crude oil export of 10.4 billion USD in 2008. These statistics show a high demand for fruits and vegetables in international markets, for which Vietnam still have high potential for development and opening new doors for farmers in highlands and rural areas to increase income. It is also part of the government’s effort; as high value agricultural production is aimed to help farmers in these areas to improve living standard.
