Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc spoke highly of Ted Osius’s contributions to elevating Vietnam - United States bilateral relationship, thus creating the foundation for the extensive development between the two countries.

The PM made the statement while hosting a reception for the outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam in Hanoi on the morning of October 17. He emphasized the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in the time ahead, on the basis of respecting each other’s political institutions.

He noted that the diplomat has made a successful working tenure in Vietnam, evidenced by the organization of a number of mutual visits by senior leaders of the two sides, including the historic visit made by PartyGeneral Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the U.S. in July 2015, U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Vietnam in July 2016, PM Phuc’s visit to the U.S. in May 2017 and the upcoming Vietnam visit made by President Donald Trump.

Economic, trade and investment ties remain the focus and motivation for bilateral relations, with two-way trade increasing from US$36 billion in 2014, when the ambassador took office, to over US$50 billion at present, the Government leader said.

He welcomed the upcoming made to Vietnam by President Donald Trump, voicing his belief that the relationship between the two countries will contribute actively to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world.

For his part, Ted Osius expressed his honour to accompany PM Phuc during his visit to the U.S. five months ago, stating that the success was a success, giving a boost to the development of bilateral relations.

The diplomat said he hoped that the upcoming Vietnam visit made by President Donald Trump will bring the relationship between the two nations to a new height. He highly appreciated the efforts made by Vietnam’s ministries, sectors and localities in organizing the APEC 2017 events, hailing this as an occasion for Vietnam to show its vibrant development to the world.

Expressing his deep sentiments towards Vietnam, Ted Osius stated that after completing his working tenure as an ambassador, he will stay in Vietnam to work in the field of education, with the aim of contributing to relations between the two countries.

Osius said the PM’s visit to the US last May helped drive development in the countries’ ties. He voiced his hope that the upcoming visit to Vietnam by President Trump will bring bilateral relations to a new height.

He also praised Vietnamese ministries, sectors and localities’ efforts in organising APEC meetings and preparing for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang city this November.
