Dien Bien opens Ban Flower festival 2017
The Ban Flower Festival 2017 and the fifth Culture – Sports – Tourism Festival kicked off on March 12 at Square 7/5 in Dien Bien city, the northern province of Dien Bien.
Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, representatives of departments and agencies, representatives of Lao localities, the French Embassy in Vietnam and thousands of ethnic minority people in Dien Bien province attended the event.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Mua A Son said the annual event aims to honour, preserve and promote cultural heritage of Vietnam and the 19 ethnic groups in Dien Bien province.
According to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the highlight of this year’s festival will be a pack-bike competition where participants are wearing the clothes of conscripted labourers or ethnic people in the northwestern region to push pack-bikes carrying food weighing 150kg from National Road 279 to the the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument on D1 Hill.
This activity aims to illustrate the Dien Bien Phu Operation of the Vietnamese people and army over 60 years ago.
This year’s festival opened with an art performance, themed “Colourful Ban Flower Season”, featuring more than 250 artists, introducing the origin of the Ban Flower and introducing the locality to visitors.
The opening ceremony also included an exhibition of local ethnic groups’ cultures as well as traditional games and a folk singing and dancing festival.
Various activities, including cultural exhibitions from ethnic groups, photos and book displays as well as sports and folk music will be held at the festival.,
Within the framework of the festival, the expanded northwestern region’s Miss Ban Flower Contest, one of the highlights of the festival, will be organised for the first time, drawing participants from eight northwestern provinces and other localities across the country. The finale of the Miss Ban Flower Contest will take place on March 14.
The fifth provincial Culture – Sports – Tourism Festival opened the same day as the Ban Flower festival.
The white and purple Ban flower is typical to the northern mountainous region of Vietnam and blossoms in spring.
The festival runs through March 14.
