The Hanoitimes - The Viettel Group officially launched its telecom network in Mozambique, under the brand name Movitel, which has the large telecoms network in Mozambique.

The mobile network is a joint venture with Mozambique’s SPI and Invespar, based in Maputo City in Mozambique.

Since receiving a licence on January 10, 2011, Viettel laid out 12,600 kilometres of fiber optic cables and built 1,800 mobile stations in Mozambique. This network represents 70 per cent of Mozambique's total fiber optic cable network and 50 per cent of the country's mobile stations.

The system has helped triple the density of Mozambique's telecom infrastructure, making it one of the world's fastest growing telecommunications networks and placing the country among the top three nations in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Movitel is the third telecom network in Mozambique, and the second largest, which accounts for 70 per cent of the total network infrastructure with 1,800 transmission stations and other ongoing infrastructure construction in the country.

As of now, Viettel has launched its services in five countries including Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia, Haiti and Mozambique.

In 2011, Viettel’s turnover reached nearly US$6 billion and 60 million in subscriptions from overseas networks, besides earning $40 million from overseas networks, a figure that is expected to double this year.
