Vietnamese Safe Farm Products and Food Week fair opened in Hanoi
The Vietnamese Safe Farm Products and Food Week fair yesterday started at the exhibition fair and economic-trade transaction area in Hoang Quoc Viet Street, Cau Giay District, Hanoi and runs until October 17.
Opening the event, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Van Suu said that with a population of 10 million, Hanoi is a major goods consumption market.
Meanwhile, the city’s agricultural production has yet to meet the demand so it has to buy farm products from other localities, posing difficulties for the city in food quality and hygiene management.
The event aims to bring safe products and specialties from localities nationwide to Hanoians while boosting trade and building consumption chains, he said.
During the week, the Agriculture Trade Promotion Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will organise activities to help customers identify safe farm products.
Agriproducts, including specialties from all over the country, will converge at the Vietnamese Safe Farm Products and Food Week.
The organisers will also set up 100 standard booths to display products at the Exhibition Fair. On display at 100 booths in the fair area and 142 distribution points across the city are 1,800 products, including rice, fruit, vegetable, tea, seafood and processed food.
The centre also gives instructions to customers to identify and trace the origin of safe agriproducts and organise a conference to review the supply of safe vegetables and meat for Hanoi in the first nine months.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will also continue strict surveillance of the trade and use of chemicals to protect plants and vegetables.
The Government should allocate sufficient funds to meet the goals of the national programme on food safety and hygiene. Allocation of other funds, including one to build a national experimental institute for food safety and hygiene, should also be done soon.
A programme on building a brand strategy for Vietnam’s food industry will help increase recognition of the country’s food products in the world market, thereby boosting the sector’s growth through stronger export.
At an earlier workshop in Hanoi in the beginning of October, Deputy Minister Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said the building of a food brand strategy is part of the National Branding Programme, which aims to build and develop brands for Vietnam’s export commodities that boast high competitiveness.
Under the programme, companies will be given advice while promotion activities will be intensified to develop a national image for the food industry. At the workshop, some food producers pointed out difficulties facing them while building food brands such as a shortage of high-quality plant and animal varieties, or farmers’ abuse of pesticides.
