Vietnam to promote LED lighting technology
The Prime Minister has approved a project funded by the United Nations Development Programme via the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to develop LED (lighting-emitting diode) lighting technology in Vietnam.
LED is a special type of semiconductor diode which can generate a narrow spectrum. LED lamps can create different colours, depending on the semiconductor materials and operating conditions.
Conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission by using more domestically-manufactured LED lighting products.
It will devise a national roadmap for LED lighting development, establish universal quality standards for LED lighting products, while raising public awareness of its benefits through workshops and training courses.
The project also plans to hold LED displays indoors and outdoors.
The nationel project will last for 4 years with the total cost of over 8.1 million USD, including more than 1.5 million USD in non-refundable aid from GEF and 6.4 million USD in kind from Vietnam.
