Through the implementation of various programmes on energy efficiency in the 2011-2015 period, Vietnam has saved 2.37 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, equivalent to almost 3.8 trillion VND each year.
Vietnam has carried out various programmes on energy efficiency, saving nearly 12 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in the recent five years.
In the 2011-2015, the Earth Hour campaign, which urges localities nationwide to turn off lights and unnecessary electrical devices for one hour, was launched with publicity blitzes.
The campaign received significant support from society. Vietnam was estimated to save an average of 419,000 kWh or 684 million VND in one hour without electric light.

In addition, an energy efficiency project geared at families attracted the participation of more than 3 million households.
A programme to use electricity safely and efficiently was introduced at elementary and secondary schools across the country. This brought basic knowledge about power as well as its uses and associated safety measures to thousands of pupils.
During the period, more than 110,000 solar boilers were also installed replacing electric ones. At present, there are 700,000 solar boilers operated nationwide, saving 1 billion kWh, equivalent to 1.6 trillion VND each year.
The Electricity of Vietnam subsidised up to 25% of fluorescent tube prices to encourage people to replace their incandescent light bulbs. Impoverished households have been given free tubes. As a result, electricity consumption was decreased by an average of 460 million kWh, or 700 billion VND per year.
In 2016, the Electricity of Vietnam will continue these sound programmes and promote the use of products with energy-saving labels.
