Vietnam needs 50,000 more ICT firms to accelerate digital transformation: Minister
Vietnam needs additional 50,000 ICT enterprises in all provinces and cities, in which big enterprises like VNPT, Vingroup, FPT, Viettel, among others play a core role.
Vietnam needs 50,000 more information technology companies to advance digital transformation in the country.
Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung made the statement at the Vietnam ICT Summit 2019 under the theme “Digital Transformation for a Prosperous Vietnam” in Hanoi on August 8.
Change on mindset
Minister Hung said that digital technology is transforming the world at a very high speed, especially some breakthrough technologies of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 are changing socio-economic fundamentals. Digital transformation will change people’s mindset on future vision and socio-economic relationships.
He stressed that this will be a great revolution when all socio-economic activities would be transferred into the virtual world for the first time.
"Only digital technology can fully develop its power, both active and negative power," Hung said, adding that if Vietnam has right policies, the country will take advantage of this opportunity to become a developed nation.
“Digital transformation is not only a technological revolution but a policy and institution revolution. Digital transformation does not need a lot of facilities, but changing people’s mindset," Hung noted.
50,000 ICT businesses in plans
Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that Vietnam needs to create additional 50,000 ICT enterprises in all provinces and cities, in which big enterprises like VNPT, Vingroup, FPT, Viettel, among others play a core role.
Accordingly, Vietnam will focus on developing four types of digital technology enterprises, including about 10-20 big technology enterprises with financial, market and human resources that can master core technologies and ICT infrastructure investment.
The next group of enterprises comprises large trade and service enterprises like Viettel and Vingroup that can turn into technology, industry, trade and service groups.
Then, the third group consists of technology ones with 10-20 years of experience, mainly outsourced companies, which will shift their business to developing their own products, focusing on the number of platforms for digital transformation. There wil be technology startups which will give consulting services on technology transfer and digital technology application in all socio-economic fields.
The fourth will be innovation starups which develop new technologies and pilot models of breakthrough business.
Vietnam can choose a three-step strategy for digital transformation, including speeding up the digitization in numerous fields, using digital transformation as a competitive advantage in each field, and moving to a comprehensive digital economy, Hung added.
The minister also stressed the guidance of the Vietnamese government plays an important role in digital transformation. The government will not only create an environment for digital transformation through institutions, but also take the lead in digital transformation.
