Vietnam for first time awards Friendship Order to a former US ambassador
On July 31, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung gave the Friendship Medal for Ted Osius, the first US Ambassador to get the award.
Former US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius has been awarded Vietnam's Order of Friendship for his contributions to the US-Vietnam relations as well as other countries worldwide, said Trung during the giving ceremony yesterday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Le Hoai Trung congratulated Ted Osius for his newly-received decoration, which was made in recognition of the ambassador’s contributions to the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership as well as the friendship between Vietnam and countries worldwide.
Vietnam highly valued the active and effective attendance of the ambassador in the two nations’ historic milestones, including the 2015 visit to the US by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and President Barack Obama's 2016 visit to Vietnam, etc, Trung said.
In terms of economic and trade, the US Embassy in Vietnam, under the leadership of Ambassador Osius, delivered numerous activities to connect bilateral enterprises, harness the potentials and the supportive features of the bilateral economic ties.
Vietnam also recognized the US diplomat’s positive contributions to the expanded ties between the two countries in education-training, people-to-people diplomatic, war aftermath solving including the Dioxin Contamination Project at Da Nang Airport. The Deputy Minister showed his happiness with the success of the project and announced that both sides remain a similar one at Bien Hoa Airport.
As an ambassador, Ted Osius impressed Vietnamese people with his rich knowledge in the country's culture, said Le Hoai Trung. The clip he made before arriving in Vietnam still lingers in people’s mind of a modest diplomat wearing Vietnam’s tradition costumes. During his tenure, the ambassador stayed close to the Vietnamese daily life with his trip to the traditional flower market on occasion of the Lunar New Year festival or the carp release on Vietnam’ Day of Kitchen Gods like a real local. The image of him cycling through the country impressed Vietnamese people also.
Nominated by President Barack Obama in May 2014, Osius served as US Ambassador to Vietnam during 2014-2017.
During a twenty-nine-year career at the US Department of State, Osius worked at the US Mission to the United Nations and in Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Thailand, the Vatican and the Philippines. He was a lecturer at the National War College in Washington, D.C. and served as a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
