Tourism revenue forecast at VND500 trillion this year
Vietnam’s tourism revenue this year is expected to rise by VND100 trillion (US$4.4 billion) against last year to VND500 trillion, according to director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Nguyen Van Tuan.
The total is also VND40 trillion higher than the full-year target set earlier this year.
The sector is forecast to receive roughly 13 million international and 75 million domestic tourists in 2017.
Earlier this year, VNAT anticipated that the sector could attract 11.5 million international visitors and some 66.7 million domestic tourists this year, earning the country VND460 trillion.
Vietnam welcomed more than 9.4 million international tourists and 57.9 million domestic tourists in the first nine months this year. The tourism sector’s revenue was VND376 trillion during the period, up 26.5 percent against the same period last year.
Vietnam has taken measures to achieve the growth, such as simplifying immigration procedures for foreigners, diversifying and improving the quality of tourist products, strengthening management, and cleaning business environment, in addition to promoting tourism.
VNAT said the sector will carry out more activities to promote the tourism image, strengthen its destination management, and cooperate with airlines to offer attractive packages for tourists.
However, it suggested, the government should make more policies conductive to the sector, such as adding more to the list of countries whose citizens can apply for e-visa, and spending more on tourism promotions.
According to VNAT, tourism promotion has contributed significantly to the good growth of Vietnam’s tourism in recent years. However, the field is facing many difficulties due to limited funding and low professionalism.
Meanwhile, experts said that in order to improve the effectiveness of tourism promotion, the tourism sector should research on the establishment of an agency, which is responsible for promoting national tourism, and strengthening the coordination and connection between tourism promotion centers across the country.
Especially, the role of VNAT in orienting, updating, and forecasting market movements is the basis for all action programs, the experts said, adding that the contents and methods of organization need to be renewed and implemented effectively to better the Tourism Development Assistance Fund.
Meanwhile, authorities should combine tourism promotion effectively with trade and Vietnamese cultural centers in other countries to promote the image of Vietnam.
Vietnam received around 10 million international and 62 million local tourists last year, and tourism revenue totaled roughly VND400 trillion, over VND60 trillion above the 2015 figure.
