Six new-built bridges across the city: A leap for Hanoi development
Cam Anh - Ngoc Hai 14:22, 2017/09/08
There is a proposal of constructing more 6 bridges acrossing Duong River and Red River in Hanoi. This could open a new development page for the city.
The construction of six bridges: Tu Lien, Thuong Cat, Vinh Tuy (phase 2), Tran Hung Dao, Duong 2 and Giang Bien is not only aim to connect the Ring Roads 3, 3.5 and 4  but also plays a very important role in developing Hanoi to the north of the Red River.
Solution to people extension problem
Of the above 6 bridges, Tran Hung Dao Bridge is expected to contribute a solution for the extension problem in the old town (Hoan Kiem district). According to experts, the only solution to overcoming social and technical infrastructure overload, as well as to preserve and restore the old town is defined as mechanical extension. However, the traffic capacity of Chuong Duong and Long Bien bridges no longer meets the actual demand, traffic jams occurs daily during peak hours. Vinh Tuy bridge is also overloaded by the great traffic pressure of the North gate of the capital.

In order to expand the connection between the northern and the center of Hanoi, the city plans to construct Tran Hung Dao bridge and continue to complete the second phase of Vinh Tuy bridge. Head of Design Department, Transport Engineering Design Inc. (TEDI), Dang Hoang Hiep said: "The investment in a project crossing the Red River within the four inner districts of the old city as Tran Hung Dao bridge is urgent and feasible. This project, when completed, will open a new way of communication directly to the center of Hanoi city, effectively supporting for Chuong Duong, Long Bien and Vinh Tuy bridges. "
Mr. Hiep further added that the completion of the Vinh Tuy Bridge Phase 2 in accordance with the investment phasing plan would complete Ring Road 2, meet the transportation demand and ensure traffic safety while enabling comprehensive development of Hai Ba Trung, Long Bien districts in particular and Hanoi capital in general.
In fact, Phuc Dong, Phuc Loi and Giang Bien (Long Bien) wards have been invested in infrastructure to form a large urban area. This area is also expected to contribute to the extension of Hanoi's old center. In addition, Vinh Tuy bridge has been put into operation, part of the road connecting from the intersection of Highway 5 to Vincom Village has been invested with a cross-section of 40 - 81m wide. Therefore, the construction of Giang Bien bridge crossing the Duong river and the route from Vinh Tuy bridge to Ninh Hiep to attract the number of vehicles from Lang Son, Bac Giang ... QL1A, crossing Vinh Tuy bridge to Hanoi is very necessary.
The East of Ring road 4
In the north and west of Hanoi, Thuong Cat, Tu Lien bridges are considered as the core axis to promote the development of Dong Anh, Me Linh, Bac Tu Liem, Nam Tu Liem, Dan Phuong and Hoai Duc districts.
Thuong Cat bridge plays an important role in connecting Ring road 3, 5, contributing to support for Ring Road 3 in the future. Upon completion, Thuong Cat Bridge will ensure the conditions of transport infrastructure serving the urban areas along the route.
Tu Lien Bridge will create a link from the West Lake tourist area to Co Loa (Dong Anh). Therefore, it has been targeted by the Hanoi People's Committee to ensure both the aesthetic factor and become the architectural highlight of the capital together with Nhat Tan Bridge.
With the presence of the six bridges: Tu Lien, Thuong Cat, Vinh Tuy (Phase 2), Tran Hung Dao, Duong 2 and Giang Bien, Hanoi will be able to form a connection around the Red River, creating premise for the comprehensive development of the capital.
