Seminar discusses ways to promote gender equality

A seminar o­n accelerating the implementation of the National Strategy o­n Gender Equality during the 2011-2020 period took place in Hanoi o­n Sept. 29.

The event was jointly held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) and the UN WOMEN, an organisation of the United Nations dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Opening the seminar, MoLISA Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Hoa said gender equality is an important goal in promoting women’s social role and limitations in this field are o­ne of the barriers hindering sustainable development and social equality.

She called o­n the entire society to reach consensus and make strong commitment to realising the strategy in the coming time.

VGCL Vice President Nguyen Hoa Binh stressed that there should be specific suitable solutions to each locality and unit while implementing policies o­n gender equality in daily life.

Delegates at the seminar agreed o­n the need to continue improving policies o­n gender equality and enhancing state managerial capacity in this field, pay more attention to information dissemination and education, mobilise and use effectively capital for gender equality.

The national strategy specifies indicators and measures to promote women’s participation in managerial and leadership posts, narrow the gender gap in areas such as politics, economics, education and training, health care and culture sectors with special attention paid to women in rural and ethnic regions.
